Amy Grant recalls a lesson she learned from Paul Newman

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Christian singer Amy Grant remembers how star-struck she felt meeting Paul Newman, the Oscar-winning actor who died Friday at the age of 83.

In a 2006 interview, Grant recalled that when she sang at one of Newman’s Hole in the Wall camps for terminally ill children, she suddenly saw him riding by on a bicycle.

Inspired by the camp and reminded of the famous bicycle scene from “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” Grant says she told Newman what a great man she thought he was. But he laughed and said, “I’m just an old curmudgeon — never forget that.”

Amy Grant says Paul Newman and others have taught her “We’re all a bunch of curmudgeons. Every once in a while, we do something good.”

amy your music has always rocked, and it is as fresh now as when you first wrote and performed it. Thank you for hanging in there and doing what you’ve been called to do all the times it would have been easier to stay home and not face another critic.
